Fiber Foundation: A Story of Impact & Innovation
At the intersection of global connectivity and Southern grit, something remarkable happened! DC BLOX, with their visionary eye on the future of digital infrastructure in the Southeast, set out to build a strategic dark fiber backbone, stretching from the Myrtle Beach Cable Landing Station (CLS) to the heart of Atlanta. Who did they call when it was time to turn plans into pavement (and conduit)? Hutchins Telecom, a proud division of UniTek Global Services.
What began as a straightforward fiber pull through existing conduit quickly turned into a dynamic partnership rooted in trust, innovation, and a shared sense of mission.
Connecting the Southeast to the World
The Myrtle Beach CLS was not just another stop on the map. It was DC BLOX’s answer to hyperscale demand for subsea cable access and global interconnection. Designed to link the U.S. Southeast to five countries in South America, and Europe (with more on the way), this project put the region on the map, literally. The route from Myrtle Beach to Atlanta became the first east to west dark fiber link in the area, quickly earning its stripes as a new backbone for regional and international data.
Why Hutchins Telecom?
Simple. They delivered, and then some. Originally hired for the Myrtle Beach to Atlanta build, Hutchin’s performance earned them more: the Atlanta Metro, and North Charleston extensions. From superior designs to hands-on management, DC BLOX found in Hutchins a partner who understood the mission and owned the details.
“In the end, Hutchins Telecom delivered on exactly what they promised, which is exactly what was needed for DC BLOX to maintain the trust of our customers.”
– Chris Davis, Sr. Director of Customer Operations, DC BLOX
Problem Solving on the Fly
Fiber builds are never easy, and this one was no exception. The initial design of one of our routes had some gaps that Hutchins Telecom was able to enhance during engineering, resulting in superior execution, and avoidance of obstacles. When potential drilling risks arose in the Atlanta Metro, Hutchins rerouted the plan to save time, money, and headaches.
Communication that Builds Confidence
In fast-paced builds, communication makes or breaks momentum. The Hutchins team did not just provide updates; they delivered timely insights that helped DC BLOX manage client expectations and stay ahead of issues. That level of transparency is not just helpful, it is powerful!
Impact and Expansion
The results speak for themselves. DC BLOX now has:
- A reliable dark fiber route from the coast to Atlanta’s key connectivity hubs
- Two vital extensions (Atlanta Metro & Charleston North) that aggregate and transport data from hyperscale data centers and internet exchanges.
- A partner who does not just build, they build trust.
And let’s not forget the icing on the fiber cake: Hutchins Telecom completed the Charleston route ahead of schedule, giving DC BLOX the kind of win that turns clients into lifelong champions.
A Partnership Built to Last
When asked if they’d work with Hutchins Telecom again, DC BLOX’s response was clear: “Absolutely.” With more infrastructure expansion on the horizon, Hutchins Telecom remains their go-to team for future fiber development. When it comes to laying the groundwork for innovation, choosing the right partner makes all the difference.
